Secretary of Transportation threatens California with revocation of the right to issue CDL
October 28, 2025
The head of the U.S. Department of Transportation, Sean Duffy, announced plans to suspend the allocation of $ 160 million in financial resources to California for non-compliance with the rules of the Department of Transport.
He said that California can completely lose the right to issue a commercial driver's license (CDL).
Duffy claims that the California has issued about 60,000 CDLs to non-citizens with unclear immigration status who operate, among other things, fuel trucks and school buses.
In his opinion, this led to the increase in the number of accidents on US roads due to drivers who should not have received such licenses.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles says the federal government has no legitimate reason to withhold funds. Eva Spiegel, a representative of the department, said that the state complies with the new federal rules introduced on September 29 and will continue to follow the law.
