Independence Day long weekend creates extra opportunities for thieves
July 01, 2025

The upcoming US Independence Day falling on a Friday will create increased risks for cargo shipments due to reduced schedules and increased periods of unattended freight.
Cargo security firm Overhaul warns that organized crime groups may exploit this, staging strategic thefts, especially of high-value goods like electronics, high-end apparel, alcohol, and food products. 2025 has already seen a rise in such thefts, particularly at rail yards and intermodal hubs.
Carriers are advised to thoroughly vet all supply chain participants, confirm receiver hours in advance, and plan stops in secure, well-lit locations.
Additionally, it is important to ensure all facility security systems are fully operational.
